About this work
Courchevel, circa 1970
Under the eaves of a wooden chalet a group sits at a table with a pink cloth, bottles of wine and plates. A woman with red hair and bare shoulders looks aside, a man in a yellow cap and sunglasses leans toward a woman in a fur coat and white headscarf. Behind them stands a wall of banked-up snow, with skis planted upright in it and tracks on the slope.
A ski holiday in Courchevel, France, around 1970. Aarons photographs the group up close, with one head out of focus at the bottom edge, and leaves the upper half of the frame almost entirely white. That division gives the photograph its temperature: fur, a pink tablecloth and red hair below, only snow and light above. The difference between the warm corner at the table and the bare mountain behind it makes the lunch tangible.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
