About this work
Tropical Mustique, Grenadines 1989
From a high terrace you look out over a reef that lies in patches of turquoise and dark blue beneath the water, to a white spit of sand and a wooded headland. A windsurfer sails past. On the terrace, white loungers stand among palms in round planting beds, with guests in swimwear and summer dresses. In front, a waiter in a white jacket stands by a drinks cart with bottles.
In February 1989 Slim Aarons photographed Pierre Vincent Marais, who was on vacation with friends on the island of Mustique in the Grenadines. The vantage point is high enough to show terrace and sea at once, and so the picture splits into two layers. On the terrace everything is white and in rows. Beyond it the reef spreads out in streaks and patches, without any order, all the way to the horizon.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
