About this work

Acapulco Lunch, 1966

At a long wooden table under a covered veranda the guests sit close together, among platters of food, bottles and rows of empty wine glasses. At front left sits a gray-haired man in a striped sweater, at right a man in a red shirt with white dots. A shirtless man stands at the back, and far behind, musicians play guitars among the greenery.

In February 1966 Slim Aarons photographed a long afternoon lunch in Acapulco. The guests included film star Douglas Fairbanks Jr., the couturiers Oscar de la Renta and Emilio Pucci, and T Reed Vreeland, who stood behind the host: Pat de Cicco, in the red shirt. Aarons looks down the length of the table from its end, so nobody poses and the party simply goes on eating, talking and pouring.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
