About this work
Pool At El Venerol, Marbella 1967
A long pool of bright blue water fills the lower half of the picture. Behind it lies a white villa with arched windows, awnings and broad steps, and above it rises a bare, rocky mountain. On the terrace two women in hats sit on a low bench, guests stand among hanging chairs and palms, and a woman in a bikini crouches at the water's edge.
In August 1967 Slim Aarons photographed guests at the pool of El Venerol, the villa of Hector and Chico de Ayala in Marbella, Spain. The water takes up almost half the picture and mirrors the white house. What gives the picture its calm is the stacking of horizontal layers: water, terrace, facade and mountain lie neatly on top of one another, and the guests form a narrow strip of life between the pool and the house.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
