About this work

The Jourdans, Cap d'Antibes 1969

A man and a woman walk close together along a wide gravel path toward the camera, his arm around her shoulders. She wears a yellow sleeveless dress, large sunglasses and light sandals; he a salmon-pink shirt with rolled-up sleeves, black swim trunks and light brown loafers, a small red case in his hand. Behind them stands a pale facade with a blue-gray roof among pine trees and a palm.

Slim Aarons photographed the French actor Louis Jourdan and his wife Quiquie in August 1969 at the Eden Roc annex of the Hotel du Cap d'Antibes on the French Riviera. The path runs in a straight line from the hotel to the lens, and the couple walks right down the middle. That gives the picture the shape of an entrance: the house as background, the gravel as a carpet, and two people in summer clothes strolling across it at ease.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
