About this work
Fontana di Trevi, Rome 1978
The Trevi Fountain fills the frame from edge to edge: a facade with columns, statues in niches and, at the top, a coat of arms between sculpted figures. In the central niche a statue stands above a cascade of white rocks, horses and figures, over which water flows into a pale green basin. Small figures walk along the edges of the square, under a clear blue sky.
Slim Aarons photographed the Trevi Fountain in Rome in September 1978. According to the caption, the Roman god Neptune stands in the central niche, framed by the facade of the Palazzo Poli. The vantage point is high and straight opposite the center, so the fountain sets itself up like a stage: the facade is the set, the rocks are the platform, and the people at the edges are so small that they mainly show the scale.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
