About this work
Britt Ekland, Porto Ercole 1969
A woman with long strawberry-blond hair sits on a sofa with dark blue cushions and leans on her arms against a cushion in front of her. She wears a patterned strapless dress, a silk scarf, a gold necklace and rings on almost every finger. Behind her lies a white living room with pale sofas, a fireplace and two abstract paintings.
The Swedish actress Britt Ekland was photographed in Porto Ercole, Italy, in 1969. The interior around her is white and quiet; sofas and fireplace dissolve into blur. All the warmth is in her: the copper-colored hair, the gold, the skin. Because she sits low in the frame and looks straight into the lens, the room falls back to a backdrop and mostly her gaze remains.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
