About this work
Southern Belle, Oak Alley 1957
A young woman in a white wedding dress stands in the middle of a lawn, the train spread behind her over the grass in a long arc. She has dark curly hair and red lips and looks seriously into the camera. Behind her two rows of oaks with heavy, twisting branches form a covered avenue that ends at a white house with columns.
Mrs William Ferguson, born Margarette Anne Williams, stood in 1957 in her wedding dress at Oak Alley, a Mississippi mansion famous for its double row of oak trees; those trees stand behind her. The branches bend in from both sides toward the center and close like a vault, with the house exactly at the vanishing point. She stands just off that axis, so avenue and bride do not crowd each other.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
