About this work
Towboat At Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc, Antibes 1969
A white motorboat with brown cushions is moored at a concrete jetty beneath jagged limestone cliffs. A man in swim trunks stands on the edge beside it. A staircase leads up to beach cabins and striped parasols among the pines. In the foreground, on the edge of a wooden boat, a water ski rests above the dark water.
The boat was used to tow water skiers at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, on the French Riviera, and Slim Aarons photographed it in August 1969. The picture was taken from the water, from a second boat of which only a piece of hull and a water ski appear. So you are not looking at the coast from a distance; you are already part of the next run.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
