About this work
Party At Romanoff's, Beverly Hills 1959
A packed dining room with round tables, candelabras with white candles and flower arrangements among the glasses. Men in tuxedos and women in evening gowns sit close together. A mirrored wall behind them doubles everything: the chandeliers, the draperies on the ceiling, the candles and another room full of guests. On the right, palm fronds stand against a marble column.
A party at Romanoff's in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, in 1959. Slim Aarons photographed the restaurant so that the mirrored wall fills almost half the frame. It is therefore not immediately clear where the real room ends and the reflection begins; the company seems twice as large. In the foreground nobody looks at the camera, everyone is in the middle of a conversation.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
