About this work
Sunbathers At Eden Roc, Antibes 1969
From above you see white mattresses on a stone terrace, set side by side at an angle. Two women in bikinis lie in the sun with their arms behind their heads, a man beside them with his back to the camera. At the top lie two more sunbathers, and among the rocks two children sit together. A wicker basket stands next to the parasol bases.
Sunbathers at the Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, in August 1969. Slim Aarons photographed them straight from above, so that the white mattresses form a pattern of diagonal bands across the whole frame. The bodies become almost graphic shapes within it. Only the two children by the rocks at upper right sit upright and move; they break the rhythm of lying down.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
