About this work
Sailing In Anguilla, January 1992
On a white beach lies a small sailboat with a large white, blue and yellow sail bearing a black fin-shaped emblem. A man in pink swim trunks reaches up to the mast, a woman in a bikini stands by the hull. Farther along lies a second boat with an orange-yellow sail; behind it, white buildings with domes and palms stand under a dark blue sky with white clouds.
According to the caption, a couple were adjusting the sail of their dinghy here, at a luxury resort on the island of Anguilla in the West Indies, in January 1992. The colors do most of the work. The bright sail catches the sunlight against a sky that is almost ink blue, so the boat leaps forward, while the white of sand, buildings and clouds keeps the rest of the image calm. The two people are almost incidental next to the canvas.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
