About this work
Porto Ercole, August 1973
From high on the rocks you look straight down into clear blue-green water. A white motorboat lies still in front of a wooden deck, with people on board; a line runs to a small boat. Farther out a sun raft drifts, a sailboat at the upper left. At the bottom, bathers sit under red-and-blue parasols among the stones.
A Magnum motorboat belonging to Count Filippo Theodoli arrived at the private jetty of the Il Pellicano Hotel in Porto Ercole, Italy, in August 1973. Slim Aarons photographed it from above, so that sea and coast lie in one vertical plane. The jetty points like an arrow at the boat, and the eye follows the line of parasols across the deck to the open water.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
