About this work

Lehman Family In Casa De Campo, 1990

Five people sit and lean along a broad, curved wall of gray-white stone with a diamond pattern, among palms and flowering shrubs. In the middle sits an older man in a blue polo shirt with something opened on his lap, beside him a woman in a purple shirt. Three young women sit around them; at the back someone in a straw hat stands on steps by white buildings.

The American educator and philanthropist Orin Lehman sat here in 1990 with his wife Wendy Vanderbilt Lehman (center) and their daughters Sage, Brooke and Susan in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic. The family portrait is loosely arranged: everyone picks a spot on the stones, and yet the curve of the wall binds them into one group. The figure on the steps at the back, who belongs to nothing, makes it an ordinary afternoon.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
