About this work
Jourdan And Douglas, Antibes 1969
In a beach hut with wooden beams and wicker walls, four people sit around a table with a green checked cloth, plates and a bottle. On the left a dark-haired, bare-chested man in dark swim trunks leans forward on a rattan chair. On the right a blonde woman sits in a yellow beach chair, knees drawn up, a napkin in her hand. At the back, clothes hang on the wall.
From left to right: the French actor Louis Jourdan, Anne Buydens, her husband the American actor Kirk Douglas and Jourdan's wife Quiquie. In August 1969 they dined together in a beach hut at the Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc in Antibes, France. The meal is caught in full swing; only the woman on the right looks into the lens. The hut works as a frame within the frame: beams and doors enclose the group, and the empty rattan chair in front leaves a place open for whoever is looking.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
