About this work
C.Z. Guest With Her Great Dane, Palm Beach 1955
Between white fluted columns stands a barefoot blonde woman in a white summer outfit with thin straps. Beside her a Great Dane stands with its mouth open, her hand on its back. On the left a dark statue of a woman with a child rises on a plinth; behind the columns, palms stand out against the sky.
Socialite C.Z. Guest, Mrs. Winston F.C. Guest, posed in 1955 with her Great Dane at the Grecian temple pool of Villa Artemis, her oceanfront estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Slim Aarons places her between two columns that enclose the image like a frame. The white of the columns, the floor and her clothes lets the sand-colored dog and the black statue stand out all the more.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
