About this work
Private Island, Philippines, February 1973
A woman in a long red-and-white dress with a floral pattern walks across the sand toward the camera, a rainbow-colored umbrella over her head. The fabric blows against her legs; her shadow falls sharply beside her. Behind her stand straw parasols and sun loungers, and on the left stands a woman in a bikini. Beyond them lie the turquoise water, the mountains and a sky full of clouds.
February 1973, on the beach of the private island of Benigno Toda Jr., president of Philippine Airlines, in the Philippines. Here Slim Aarons puts one figure forward and leaves the other guests in the background. She is in motion, the rest sit or stand still, and the bright umbrella repeats the shape of the straw parasols behind her. Through that echo she belongs to the setting and still stands out.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
