About this work
CZ By The Pool, Palm Beach circa 1955
A blonde woman in a white swimsuit sits on the edge of a swimming pool with a small curly-haired dog in her arms, looking over her shoulder at the camera. Behind her, to the left by the water, stands a round temple with white columns. Dark statues and vases line the balustrade, and beyond them palms bend under a gray sky.
The caption calls her Mrs. Winston F. C. Guest, known as CZ Guest, an American society figure. Around 1955 she sat at the Greek temple pool of Villa Artemis, her seaside estate in Palm Beach, Florida. The picture works through its limited colors: white stone edge, white swimsuit, white columns, and set against them only the turquoise water. Her look back at the lens breaks that cool order.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
