Palm Beach Street, circa 1953
A wide street lined with palms runs diagonally into the picture, with parked cars with rounded noses on both sides, in black, cream, green and burgundy. Along the shops on the right hang striped and plain awnings in red, ochre and green. In the back stands a white building with red roof tiles, and high white clouds drift above it all in a deep blue sky.
Parked cars on a tree-lined street in Palm Beach, Florida, around 1953: that is how the caption describes it. Aarons took the photograph from a raised point, so the street runs like a line of perspective from the bottom edge diagonally to the back left. The palm trunks stand across it as vertical stripes. That crossing of lines gives a quiet shopping street a clear direction.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
