About this work
Viscountess Isabelle, Monte Carlo 1981
High on the deck of a yacht stands a woman in a white swimsuit with black halter straps, her arms folded behind her head. Behind her rises the dark mast, with a white crossbar, a radar antenna and two flags: a dark blue one with a yellow motif and a red-and-white one. Beyond that there is only a clear blue sky, without a single cloud.
The caption calls her the Viscountess Isabelle, aboard a yacht in the harbor of Monte Carlo, in 1981. The picture shows nothing of that harbor: Aarons shoots from below and leaves out everything except the ship and the sky. That makes the mast almost a sculpture, and her raised arms form the same V as the white crossbar above her.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
