About this work
Shooting For Fun, Kenya 1958
In dry yellow grass a man in a khaki shirt stands at right, a rifle under his arm, binoculars on his chest and a cartridge belt at his waist. Beside him a man in light clothes holds a camera to his face, aimed at the lens. At left horns, skulls and spotted and striped hides lie in a heap; behind them stand a tent, an off-road vehicle and a tree.
Hunter Reggie Destro, at right, stood in 1958 with the American photographer Arnold Newman and a collection of hunting trophies in the countryside outside Nairobi, Kenya. The image works through who is looking: Destro poses for the lens, Newman aims his own camera straight back. That makes the photograph also an image about photographing, while the trophies on the ground stay at the edge of the frame.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
