About this work
Dimitris Kritsas, Sounion 1967
Between the white columns of a temple stand four women in dresses: yellow, turquoise and two red ones. They are spread over the steps and the base, each in her own pose. At the bottom a man in a dark suit sits on the stones, a red and a light blue fabric draped loosely beside him. Above is a sharp blue sky; at right a green hill slopes away.
The Greek fashion designer Dimitris Kritsas posed in July 1967 with four models in front of the ancient Doric temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Aarons uses the columns as compartments: each model has her own stretch of the colonnade, so the four dresses do not compete. Kritsas himself sits lower than his models, among the loose fabrics, as if the atelier had come along to the steps.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
