About this work
Laguna Bowls, circa 1970
Three tall palms lean upward over a closely mown lawn-bowling green by the coast. Players and spectators stand on the grass, almost all in white and navy blue, some in white hats, spread over two rows by the benches. Behind the green the sea breaks on a rocky headland with houses; the sky is gray and hazy.
A game of bowls at the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club in Heisler Park, in southern California, around 1970. Members and guests had to observe a strict dress code. Aarons chooses the upright format and gives the palms almost two thirds of the height. The players become a strip along the bottom, small white and blue figures in fixed order, and it is that small scale that shows how strict the code is: nobody stands out.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
