About this work

Schonborn Palace, Vienna, circa 1970

Across a bare, plowed field a scattered group of figures in green and brown coats makes its way toward a rolling meadow, some in small groups, others alone. In the foreground a man in a hat with a stick walks, a dark dog right at his leg. On the left a clump of bare trees stands in the mist, and the sky merges almost seamlessly into the land.

Around 1970 Slim Aarons captured a shooting party at Schonborn Palace in Vienna, organized by Hubert and Terry von Pantz. Nothing of the palace itself can be seen. The picture is built on distance: the figures shrink as they move farther into the field, almost dissolving in the mist, and only the man with the dog stays large and close, like a starting point for the eye.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
