About this work

Polo Match, Argentina December 1990

From a great height you see a vast lawn with the mowing lines still in it. A handful of riders move in a loose group across the field, their shadows slanting on the grass. Behind them stand two striped goal posts, farther off a house with a red roof among tall trees, and beyond that the fields run flat all the way to the horizon.

A polo match in full swing, Argentina, December 1990. Aarons chose a vantage point far above the field, so that the match itself almost disappears: the players are small figures, the ball cannot be seen. What remains is the scale of the land. The field merges imperceptibly into the pastures behind it, and the game becomes a detail in a green landscape that seems to have no edge.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
