About this work

Beach In Positano, 1979

From high on the slope you look down on the beach, where hundreds of parasols in red, blue and purple stand packed together. Along the waterline rowboats lie on the sand and swimmers stand in the surf. Above rises a steep rock with white houses on its ledges, and farther on a stone tower juts out above the next bay.

Slim Aarons took this aerial shot of sunbathers and parasols on the beach at Positano in 1979. Where the beach ends, the rock begins, and that hard border carries the picture: below, the dense, colorful crowding; on the right, the dark sea; above, the green and gray mass of the mountain. The upright format gives the slope all the room, so the beach looks small against what lies above it.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
