About this work
Edna Lewis, Positano 1958
Two young women in printed tops with thin straps sit at the same table with a white and green tablecloth, both looking at their plates. The one on the left eats a salad with tomato, the one on the right cuts into something red with sauce. Between them stand empty glasses and a red ashtray; behind them other guests eat against a pink wall with ivy.
Guests at the restaurant Le Tre Sorelle in Positano, 1958, according to the caption. Aarons seems almost to sit at the table himself: a red hat and a chair back fill the foreground, as if you have just sat down. So you do not look at the women but along with them, at their plates. The lowered eyes and bowed heads make it a moment in which, for a second, nobody speaks.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
