About this work
Polo Gear, Argentina December 1990
On a mown lawn a group of polo players in white trousers and shirts sits around the open tailgate of a car, among scattered sticks, helmets and blue folding chairs. A few men in jackets stand by, talking. On the left a rider sits on a horse with two horses beside him, and behind it all rises a white country house with a slender spire against a bright blue sky.
A group of polo players with their equipment, Argentina, December 1990. Aarons photographs the moment beside the game: the gear lies every which way in the grass, most players sit low and slouched, the men in suits stand by. The white house with its tower echoes the white outfits, the horses on the left keep the picture tied to the sport, and the rest looks like a picnic on an estate.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
