About this work
Skiing In Vail, Colorado 1964
Beneath a gray-white sky a snowy slope full of spruces rises, with the long track of the ski lift in the middle. In the foreground a long line of skiers waits behind a low wooden fence, skis over their shoulders or beside them in the snow. There are folding chairs, a wooden hut with a sign, and on the right a rack full of skis.
In 1964 a group of skiers stood in line for the ski lift in Vail, Colorado. The square format divides the picture in two: at the top the empty white mountain with the lift towers as a dotted line to the summit, at the bottom the busy row of people waiting for it. The two halves need each other: without the line the mountain would be a postcard, without the mountain the line would have nowhere to go.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
