About this work
Princess Caroline Of Monaco, Monte Carlo 1981
Princess Caroline reclines on a wicker sofa full of flowered cushions, in a white blouse with red flowers and white trousers, her legs stretched along the seat. At her bare feet, at the other end, a small gray dog lies curled up. Behind her stands a vase of lilac and orange flowers in front of an arched window, between two columns carved with flowers; large houseplants grow on either side.
Princess Caroline of Monaco was photographed in August 1981 in the winter-garden room of her house on the palace grounds in Monte Carlo. Everything in the room blooms: the cushions, the blouse, the vases, even the columns around the window. Aarons lets her almost disappear into it, and that is exactly what makes the portrait. Only her dark hair and her direct gaze into the lens keep her apart from the pattern.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
