About this work
Yachting Trip, Costa Smeralda 1967
A woman in a colorful bikini wades through water so clear that you can see the rippled sand beneath. Behind her lies a black boat with a mast at anchor, a few men in swim trunks aboard; a yellow inflatable boat floats alongside. Further out lie more boats, and on the horizon gray-blue mountains and a rocky coast under a clear sky.
Selvaggia Borromeo waded ashore from her yacht in August 1967, during a holiday on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. Aarons puts the boat on the left and the woman on the right, with a stretch of turquoise water between them that almost divides the frame in two. She walks away from the boat and toward the viewer, and that makes the photograph feel less like a portrait than like a moment that is already almost over.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
