Lunch Al Fresco, Palm Springs 1970
At picnic tables with red-and-white checked cloths, a large party in cowboy hats, jeans and plaid shirts sits eating. People walk between the tables with plates; in the back, food is being dished out beside a white wagon. All around stand thick palm trunks with skirts of dead fronds, and the sand on the ground is striped by sun and shade.
In January 1970 a group of riders took a lunch break among the Washingtonia palms in Andreas Canyon near Palm Springs, in Southern California. Aarons chooses a high vantage point, so the checked tables lie scattered through the picture as red patches and the eye jumps from group to group. There are no horses in sight; only the hats and boots recall the ride.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
