About this work

Annevoie, Belgium 1980

On the castle moat floats a green flat-bottomed boat with a bunch of purple flowers at the front. At the back a woman in a pastel dress reclines on a wicker seat under a white parasol; opposite her sits a man in a dark jacket. Behind them stands a gray stone castle with rows of white windows and dormers, fully mirrored in the still water.

Jean and Christiane de Montpellier d'Annevoie had themselves photographed in 1980 in a punt on the moat around their house in Annevoie, Belgium. Aarons lets the water take up almost half the picture, and that is the find: the house appears twice, upright and upside down, with the boat exactly on the seam between them. That gives a relaxed outing something solemn.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
