About this work
Chateau Saint-Martin, Vence 1986
At the top of the frame rise hills with terraces, olive trees and scattered villas in the sun. Below them the pool lies half hidden behind a tree, and on the grass stand white tables under yellow-and-white striped parasols. On the left a waiter opens a bottle beside an ice bucket; on the right a second arranges plates on a small table. A parasol crops the bottom edge.
In 1986 guests lunched outdoors by the pool of the Chateau Saint-Martin in Vence, on the Côte d'Azur. The hotel was once a commandery of the Knights Templar, with a history going back to the twelfth century. This shot takes in the landscape: the lunch fills only the lower half, the rest is hillside and houses. That gives the scene a place in the region, and turns the waiter's gesture into a detail within a larger whole.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
