About this work
Great Harbour Cay, Bahamas 1973
A woman in red bikini bottoms and a white top walks out of shallow, light green water onto the white beach. On the left a small sailboat with a red-and-white sail rests on the sand. Farther out, where the water turns turquoise and then dark blue, a second little boat sails with the same striped sail. A heavy gray sky hangs above the horizon.
A bather on the beach at Great Harbour Cay, Bahamas, in March 1973: the caption says no more than that. The upright format does the work. The sea runs in bands from white through light green and turquoise to dark blue, and the two sails echo each other at two distances. The woman is small, but stands close to the line between water and sand, where the eye naturally lingers.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
