About this work
Beauty and the Beast - Slide, Palm Beach 1959
A blonde woman in a white dress lies on a tiger skin, propped on her arms, her face just above the open-jawed head of the animal. She looks gravely into the lens, her lips red. Behind her runs a hall with a chandelier; two dark statues on marble columns flank the doorway. The whole sits in a white slide mount with a handwritten code beneath it.
Lady Daphne Cameron, Mrs George Cameron, lay on this tiger skin in 1959, in the trophy room at Laddie Sanford's home in Palm Beach, Florida. The title says it already, and the photograph makes it concrete: two faces one above the other, one smooth and composed, the other snarling with bared teeth. The strictly symmetrical composition between the two statues sharpens that contrast. The slide mount around it presents the shot as an archive piece.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
