About this work
Princess Lucy Ruspoli, Rougemont 1984
A woman with short, wavy hair looks straight into the lens, her hands folded in front of her chest. She wears a red jacket of coarse knit with a fur collar, a white bow blouse, and pearls at her neck and ears. Pink flowers bloom in the foreground and behind her, out of focus, so that only her face and hands are truly sharp.
Princess Lucy Ruspoli was photographed in February 1984 in Rougemont, near Gstaad in Switzerland. Nothing of the ski village can be seen; Slim Aarons keeps to a close-up portrait. What carries the picture is the contrast between warm and cool: the red of the jacket and the pink flowers around her against her light blue eyes, which sit high in the frame and hold the gaze.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
