About this work

Polo Party, Palm Beach 1981

On the grass beside the polo fields a family stands and sits among yellow director's chairs, a wicker basket and a blanket covered with polo mallets and helmets. A large dog lies stretched out in front of them. Behind the group stands a red Mercedes, on the left a man waits holding horses by the reins, and a rope barrier runs between the pine trees.

Paul Butler, patriarch of one of America's foremost polo families, posed in April 1981 in Palm Beach with his son, daughter, grandchildren and son-in-law. Left to right: Reutie Butler Shober, Adam Butler, Jorie Butler Kent, Michael Butler, Paul Butler and Geoffrey Kent; the man in the background on the left is unidentified. The yellow of chairs, shirts and sashes ties the group together, as if the whole scene wore one team color.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
