About this work
Chateau Saint-Martin, Vence 1986
A white building with a tall round tower and an ivy-covered wing stands around a spacious, sunny courtyard where a few people stroll. Terracotta roofs, orange-brown shutters, a row of arched windows in the white facade. On the left stands an old stone gateway with an arch, and behind it all a wooded hill rises, dotted with villas.
In 1986 the Chateau Saint-Martin was a luxury hotel in Vence on the Côte d'Azur, France. According to the caption, the building was once a Commanderie of the Knights Templar, with a history going back to the twelfth century. This shot stays close to the complex and shows that layering: the weathered stone gateway beside the crisply plastered tower, old next to new white. The ivy on the facade stands midway between the two.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
