Porto Ercole, Tuscany, August 1969
Beneath the edge of an awning the harbor of Porto Ercole opens out: dozens of small boats on dark blue water, behind them houses in ochre and pink against a wooded hill with a fortress on the ridge. In the foreground two people lie in the shade, bare legs on the cushions, among boxes of geraniums. Just below the balcony a boat lies under a yellow sail.
Slim Aarons photographed this balcony above the harbor of Porto Ercole, in Tuscany, in August 1969. The composition makes the picture: a dark foreground of silhouettes and flowers, and above it the bright sunlight on the bay. The awning at the top and the balcony rail at the bottom form a frame, so you see the harbor the way the people on the balcony see it: reclining, half in shadow, in no hurry.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
