About this work
Casa De Campo, Dominican Republic 1985
A pavilion with two pointed thatched roofs stands on stilts in turquoise water, joined to the shore by a wooden walkway. Cushions lie on the terrace and a few guests sit there; a man in white walks across the bridge toward the entrance. A small ladder leads down into the water, where someone is swimming. Behind the pavilion, surf breaks on the reef.
The caption describes this as part of Yvette Bluhdorn's house in Casa de Campo, in the Dominican Republic, in February 1985. What makes the image strong is the relation between the small and the large. The pavilion with its two roofs fills the center, yet the sea around it covers nearly everything, and the lone swimmer at lower left shows how shallow and clear the water is.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
