About this work
Poet's Paradise, Love Beach 1957
On a white folding chair in the sand sits a man in a light gray suit, shirt open at the neck, a straw hat with a colored band on his head. He looks into the lens, mildly amused, one hand on the armrest. Behind him a palm leans over the beach, a thatched-roof hut stands to the left, and on the right the sea runs turquoise to the horizon.
The Anglo-American poet and playwright TS Eliot sat on Love Beach, on New Providence in the Bahamas, in 1957, on his honeymoon. The image appeared in Holiday Magazine in March 1960 and is included in A Wonderful Time. What carries it is the clash between clothing and place: a man in a suit and closed shoes on a beach where nothing else is formal. He sits there as calmly as if it were self-evident.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
