About this work
Dolly Fritz, San Francisco 1961
A woman with dark hair pinned up stands facing the camera, a cigarette between the fingers of a white glove. A dark fur stole lies across her shoulders, a pink dress showing beneath; a bracelet of pearls circles her wrist. Behind her lies a pond with ducks, and beyond it a dome on columns rises above the greenery, reflected in the water.
Socialite Dolly Fritz smoked a cigarette by the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco in 1961, the lagoon around it. Aarons places her close in the right half of the frame and lets the dome at left rise high above the water. That sets two similar shapes side by side: the round, closed silhouette of the stole and the dome across the water.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
