About this work
Relaxing At The Club, Palm Springs circa 1970
From high above you look down on a small flower-shaped pool, surrounded by yellow loungers on a terrace of gray and ocher panels. A few people sit in the water, others read or talk on the loungers. Beyond lies a row of tennis courts with players in white, and in the distance the mountains under a gray sky.
The caption describes members sunbathing around 1970 at the Palm Springs Tennis Club in California. This vertical picture looks almost straight down and turns the terrace into a floor plan. The yellow loungers have been pushed into rings around the pool, the paths run outward like spokes. The longer you look, the more it resembles a game board, with the guests as pieces that have just been set down.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
