About this work
CZ's House, Palm Beach circa 1955
A blond woman in white reclines in a white wicker lounge chair with a footrest, her legs resting on a blue cushion. Behind her a long, deep blue pool stretches toward a round temple with columns and a dark statue in the middle. On either side palm trees sway in the wind, with a white balustrade and open sky beyond.
Mrs. F.C. Winston Guest, known as Cee Zee Guest, lay in a garden chair around 1955 in front of the Grecian temple pool of Villa Artemis, her oceanfront estate in Palm Beach, Florida. She lies across the long axis of the pool, and that is the tension in the picture: the pool pulls your eye toward the temple in the distance, she holds it in the foreground. Her relaxed pose softens the strict architecture.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
