About this work
Acapulco Rocks, Mexico 1950
A steep rock face in reddish-brown and gray layers plunges in from the right, a lone pointed rock in the surf before it. The water foams white between the stones; farther out, waves roll across a gray-green sea under a hazy sky. At the top of the wall stands a small figure; below in the foam a head sticks up above the water. Bottom left, a blurred edge of rock.
A rocky outcrop on the coast of Acapulco in Mexico, in 1950. Aarons looks down at an angle along the wall from a higher point, so that the depth becomes tangible. Only on a longer look do the two people stand out: a figure on top of the cliff and a swimmer in the churning water. Those two small dots give the rock its scale; without them this would be a landscape, with them it becomes a height.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
