About this work
Lech Ice Bar, Lech 1960
In the snow, skiers stand around an outdoor bar with bottles on the counter; some sit on high stools, most stand chatting in small groups. A few men wear red hats. On the left a row of skis, some red, some wooden, leans against a rack. Behind the bar, wooden chalets sit against the mountain, with a white peak under a pale sky.
In 1960, skiers were having a drink at the Ice Bar of the Hotel Krone in Lech, Austria. The skis on the left are more than decor: they slant into the frame and form a frame on the left side, behind which the company unfolds. You look as someone who has just put his skis away and has yet to join the others, with the mountain behind the counter as a backdrop.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
