About this work
Lake Worth, Palm Beach 1955
Three palms stand as black silhouettes against a sky that shifts from pink to pale green. Beneath them the water lies smooth and pink; a small boat hangs on a line running to a post. On the far side a low row of trees forms a dark stripe. In the foreground the bank is almost black, and only the water still catches light.
A twilight sky above the Lake Worth inlet in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1955. There is no one in the image. The light is almost gone, reducing everything with a fixed shape to a silhouette: trunks, fronds, the boat. Color now lives only in the sky and the water, and the two mirror each other, so that the image glows toward the horizon from above and below at once.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
