About this work
Jhelum River, Srinagar 1961
A white houseboat with a red roof, lace awnings and flower pots on the railing lies in water full of round floating leaves. On the upper deck guests sit beneath the sign reading H B Cutty Sark, and on the foredeck two men in white. A narrow covered boat glides past beside it. Further off stand poplars and a row of trees under a high sky of cumulus clouds.
In 1961 Slim Aarons photographed a luxury boat trip on the Jhelum near Srinagar, in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The boat was called the HB Cutty Sark, as the sign on the roof shows. The square format gives the sky and the water roughly equal space, with the boat slanting between them. That diagonal draws the eye from the sign at the front to the poplars in the distance.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
