About this work
Conca dei Marini, August 1984
On the left a rock face with shrubs rises up; on the right a breakwater of concrete blocks closes off the bay. Between them lies a half-circle of pebble beach, strewn with towels, parasols and small boats pulled up on the shore in red, yellow and blue. Rowing boats bob in the clear green water; farther out, where the sea turns dark blue, a few white motor yachts lie.
The picture was taken in August 1984 at Conca dei Marini, on the Amalfi coast in Italy, where Slim Aarons captured a busy bay. The horizontal crop shows what a vertical image cuts away: the rocks embracing the bay. That makes you read the beach as a bowl, sheltered between stone and concrete, and gives the brightly coloured boats a frame that keeps their bustle together.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
